The Marketing Mistake
I Made for Six Years

The Marketing Mistake I Made for Six Years

In 2017, an American entrepreneur named Tommy Mello hired me to help him share what he had learned from scaling his home service company.

Neither of us could have imagined that our work together would eventually lead to:

  • Two best-selling books

  • A top 10 Apple business podcast

  • A newsletter with nearly 20,000 subscribers

  • An annual conference with 1,500 attendees

  • An 8-figure expert business

But for almost six years, building a financially sustainable business around his expertise felt like pushing a boulder uphill.

I still vividly remember one call when we seriously considered walking away from it altogether.

“Gianni, this membership program has been stuck in the same place for almost a year,” Tommy said. “And people in my other business are starting to complain that this has become a distraction.”

It was 2022.

By then, we had launched his podcast, published his first book, and created a membership program to monetize the growing audience.

On paper, we were doing everything right:

  • Publishing a new podcast episode every week

  • Consistently generating leads through a book funnel

  • Nurturing those leads through email sequences

  • Getting warm prospects onto sales calls for the membership

  • Continuously improving the membership to retain more customers

But despite all that, getting prospects to pay $397 a month for the membership still felt like a constant battle.

When I listened to recordings of the sales calls, I kept hearing variations of the same objections:

“I’m not sure this applies to my situation.”

“But this other program also offers X, Y, and Z.”

“I’m still trying to implement everything I learned from Tommy’s book.”

That last objection caught me off guard.

If people are getting so much value from the book, why are they still hesitating to join the membership?

That was the moment I realized the problem wasn't our offer, funnel, or sales process.

It was a marketing mistake I had been making for almost six years.

The Book That Changed The Game

In June 2022, Tommy began pushing to publish a second book.

Given the lack of growth in the membership, I wasn’t convinced another book was the best use of our time.

But eventually, it made its way onto our weekly agenda.

As we discussed what the new book should include, I said something that made Tommy look at me as though I had lost my mind.

“Tommy, I think the mistake we made with the first book was that we delivered the wrong kind of value.”

“So what are you saying?” he replied, unsure where I was going.

“The book showed readers everything they could do to grow their businesses. By the time they reached the end, they felt they had years of work ahead of them—but no compelling reason to believe they needed our help to do it.”

“Yeah, but people loved the book,” Tommy said.

“But how many of them actually implemented what you shared?” I asked. “How many success stories came from it?”

Tommy paused for a few seconds.

“You know, I just finished an incredible book,” he said. “Yesterday, I reached out to the author and asked if I could work with him.”

I leaned forward.

“What made you want to work with him?”

“His story,” Tommy replied, without missing a beat.

“It made me see the mistakes I was making. It showed me that I had been trying to solve the wrong problem—and made me believe there was a better path forward.”

I leaned back in my chair. Tommy smiled.

We both knew we had found something.

But we wouldn’t understand just how powerful it was until six months after the book was released.

One Hundred Memberships Sold In One Day

It was November 2023.

The book had been released six months earlier, and 736 people were now arriving in Orlando, Florida, for our first three-day conference.

As attendees began to arrive, I moved between the different groups, introducing myself and listening to their conversations.

The more I listened, the more I noticed something remarkable:

Tommy’s stories from the book had become a shared language.

People weren’t simply repeating his advice.

They were referring to the characters, mistakes, decisions, and turning points from his stories to explain what was happening in their own businesses.

But the clearest proof came on the final day.

When we introduced the new membership program from the stage, people began rushing to the table at the back of the room with credit cards in hand.

In less than an hour, one hundred people joined—generating $250,000 only from enrollment fees.

For the first time, I could see clearly what the stories had accomplished: they had already done the selling. The enrollment table was simply where people completed the transaction.

From that point forward, we doubled down on stories—and the business began to build real momentum.

Our second event welcomed 950 attendees in 2024. The third grew to 1,500 in 2025.

The podcast entered Apple’s Top 10 in the Business category.

The membership continued to grow.

And in 2026, the expert business finally reached eight figures in annual revenue.

Stories weren’t the only reason for the business’s success.

But they had become the most powerful marketing tool in our toolkit.

So I began studying the stories that had created the greatest shifts in our audience.

I wanted to understand why they worked—and whether the same principles could be applied deliberately.

Those insights became the foundation of the Signature Story Framework.

Most experts know they have valuable stories.

The difficult part is knowing which stories are worth telling, what each one should communicate, how to structure them, and where to use them for the greatest impact.

In this live 90-minute workshop, I’ll show you how to do that using the three-step Signature Story Framework:

Story Extraction

Uncover the beliefs, experiences, decisions, and trade-offs behind your expertise—and identify the stories that bring them to life.

Story Packaging

Shape those stories into signature narratives that make your expertise easier to understand, remember, and trust.

Story Distribution

Match the right stories to the right moments—earning attention during discovery, building trust during engagement, and increasing confidence before purchase.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a clear process for turning your experience into signature stories that help you:

  • Build trust faster

  • Attract more qualified prospects

  • Generate more high-ticket sales

You already have the stories.

The question is whether they remain buried in your experience—or become the reason the right prospects choose you.

Have real experience, results, and a distinct point of view

  • Want a repeatable process—not generic storytelling prompts or tips

  • Know their marketing does not yet reflect the depth of their experience

  • Believe marketing should do more than generate leads or feed algorithms

Hi, I'm Gianni Cara

In 2017, Tommy Mello hired me to help him build a business around his expertise.

Over the years, we turned the experiences behind his home service company into stories that travelled across best-selling books, a top 10 Apple business podcast, newsletters, events, and offers.

Those stories helped people understand his ideas, trust his approach, and see themselves in the journey—helping build an expert business that eventually reached eight figures in annual revenue.

The Signature Story Workshop is where I’ll share the framework that emerged from that work, so you can identify, shape, and strategically use the stories already hidden inside your own experience.

A Few Practical Questions

What happens during the workshop?

I’ll walk you through the three-step Signature Story Framework, explain how each stage works, and show you how to begin applying it to your own business.

Will we write or develop my stories during the workshop?

No. This is not a hands-on writing session or a series of individual hot seats.

The goal is to give you a clear, repeatable method for identifying, shaping, and using the right stories on your own.

Will there be time to ask questions?

Yes. There is room for questions throughout the session and at the end.

Will I receive a recording?

Yes. Whether you cannot attend live or simply want to revisit the material afterward, you’ll receive the full recording.

Do I need to have an offer already?

Ideally, yes.

The stories you choose should reinforce the value of your offer and help the right people understand why it matters.

Without that clarity, you risk attracting the wrong audience—or becoming known for ideas that do not support the business you want to build.

Is this only for people who want to create content?

No.

Content can be useful, but it is only one place stories can do their work.

With Tommy, we focused first on building a strong paid funnel. Social media content came later.

The process applies anywhere people form an impression of your work: your website, offer pages, ads, sales conversations, podcast outreach, events, and more.

Do I need a large audience?

No.

The workshop is about making your expertise easier to recognize before you try to reach more people.

It can be especially useful if you already have meaningful experience and a proven offer, but your market does not yet understand what makes your perspective different.

What should I bring?

Come with an open mind and, ideally, a clear sense of the offer, expertise, or area of work you want to become known for.
